How to Switch from Ozempic to Wegovy for Weight Loss?

Are you currently taking Ozempic for weight loss? And wondering if you could switch to Wegovy, licensed for chronic weight management. GLP-1 receptors like Ozempic and Wegovy have been in the limelight since 2017.

Switching from Ozempic to Wegovy is a decision that should be made with the guidance of your healthcare provider and an understanding of both weight loss injections. In this blog, you will learn about the reasons for switching, the process involved, and what to expect when transitioning from Ozempic to Wegovy.

Understanding Wegovy and Ozempic

What is Ozempic?

Ozempic, known as Semaglutide, is primarily used for type 2 diabetes management. It helps in controlling blood sugar levels and promotes weight loss.

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy, which also contains Semaglutide, is primarily used for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above. It is also suitable for adults with a BMI of 27 or higher and at least one weight-related health issue, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol. It’s a higher-dose formulation than Ozempic and is licensed for weight loss.

Why Do You Need to Switch from Ozempic to Wegovy?

You need to switch from Ozempic to Wegovy for multiple reasons. Some of them are:

  1. Patients on Wegovy can have greater weight loss because it’s available in higher maintenance doses needed to shed the weight.
  2. Wegovy is licensed for chronic weight management
  3. Wegovy is available in high-maintenance dosages of 1.7 mg and 2.4 mg
  4. There are stock issues with Ozempic as it’s needed by diabetic patients, which isn’t the case for Wegovy
  5. Ozempic is not licensed for weight loss in the UK.

In research, the higher dose of Wegovy resulted in greater weight loss than the lower dose of Ozempic. For instance, people taking Wegovy lost more weight than those using Ozempic during the study.

Factors You Should Consider Before Switching

If you want to switch from Ozempic to Wegovy, the only factor to consider is that Wegovy is the medicine licensed for weight loss. Therefore, it has been trialled and tested for this condition. This means you can be reassured that the medicine is being used for its purpose. Although the active ingredient is the same as in Ozempic, it’s very important for prescribers to issue medicines for the intended treatment they are licensed for.

Benefits & Side Effects of Switching from Ozempic to Wegovy

Benefits of Wegovy

  • Significant weight loss
  • Reduced appetite and make you feel fuller throughout the day
  • Improved blood sugar control (suitable for PCOS patients and people having BMI<27 with type 2 diabetes)

Side Effects of Wegovy

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and abdominal pain are quite common. These symptoms are often mild to moderate and can decrease over time.

Dosing Schedule & Guidelines

It is essential to consult with a healthcare provider before making the switch. They can assess your health condition, medication history, and suitability for Wegovy.

When switching from Ozempic to Wegovy, your healthcare provider has to consider the Ozempic dose you were on and how it affected you, including any side effects.

Ozempic vs. Wegovy Dosage Schedule

Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Wegovy and Ozempic recommends starting Wegovy with a small dose i.e. 0.25mg. However, if you are already taking Ozempic 1mg and your GP feels it is safe to switch to Wegovy, you can start Wegovy at 0.5mg.

In some cases, your GP would consider continuing with the same dose of Wegovy, i.e., Ozempic 1mg to Wegovy 1mg.

How Long Does Wegovy Stay in Your Body?

On average, Wegovy has a half-life of approximately 1 week, and it takes about 7 weeks for the medication to be completely eliminated from your body.

The Switching Process

Suppose you’re currently using Ozempic for weight loss and want to switch to Wegovy for effective weight loss. In that case, it’s a good idea to consult with your GP, pharmacist, or healthcare expert first. They can assess if changing medications is right for you.

Managing Side Effects

Both weight loss medications can cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Monitoring these and communicating with your doctor is vital during the switch.
